El Paso County Commissioner Peggy Littleton left July 17 for Emittsburg, Maryland, home of the Emergency Management Institute, one of several training facilities for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She’ll be there until July 29, taking emergency preparedness training.
Littleton has embraced the concept of being prepared for a disaster, as one of her focuses as a commissioner. She also took a course through the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and has seen the emergency operation centers at the five military bases in Colorado Springs, as well as the city.
She said she wants to create a “YOYO” booklet (You’re On Your Own) that discusses personal responsibility during emergency situations and how people can prepare for natural and manmade crises.
“We may not have a tsunami in Colorado Springs, but I think people sense the impending financial tsunami nationwide,” she said. “None of us has ever gone through the type of financial Depression that I think we’re getting ready to face. I’d like to do a ‘personal responsibility for dummies’ type of booklet , so people can learn what they need for a week’s worth of supplies and other aspects,” she said.
I’ve been saying for years that the GOP has left 98% of all Americans in a state of “You’re On Your Own” when it comes many things, from health care to consumer protection to getting us off of OPEC oil, etc.
Glad to see the party has plagiarized my acronym from my YOYO rants as part of their official line. At least they’re being honest for a change.
Welcome to YOYO nation.
LOL, right Crank, the democrats tried to “help” people with things like the CRA and look what THAT did to the country. Can’t wait to see what OBamacare does to the country. With their kind of “help” America doesn’t need enemies!
Crank: You also seem to think its OK for people not to be self-sufficient and instead rely on the taxpayer-fed government to care for their every need. Maybe if people were “YOYO” they would realize they CAN make it without relying on the government!
You have to forgive crank, he’s old and senile.
kr, spare us the childish nonsense about relying on the govt. We’re not talking about guvmint cheese, we’re talking about serious national issues that require a proactive government to make sure the airlines are safe, the water is clean, the roads are safe. Why am I wasting my time arguing with ninnies quoting childish tea party stupidity.
Who the hell are you going to rely on to police Wall Street and the banks? Huh? You want to rely on Bernie Madoff? Go ahead, send him YOUR money. Genius.
So genius, tell us, who do we rely on to keep the markets honest, to pursue polluters, etc.
When I say that the GOP has left us in YOYO land, I’m talking about they only talk about closing the borders, but never to, in which case You’re On Your Own as far as losing your work to someone willing to work for half price and no benefits.
The list of topics on which the GOP has forsaken us is long. YOYO
What their “plan” amounts to is the GOP admitting that they aren’t going to help you in case of a natural emergency.
Tornado? YOYO Flood? YOYO Pandemic? YOYO
Want proof? Look at how the GOP let New Orleans, and 1000 people, drown when Hurricane Katrina came along. Hurricane? YOYO
The GOP is too busy pandering to the richest 1% and you bet THEY will get preferred treatment when a disaster strikes. Fire in the hills behind the Broadmoor? Call out the National Guard! Get the aerial tankers flying! Get that fire out, now! But if there’s a forest or grass fire behind YOUR house, tough stuff, sucks to be you pal, YOYO.
It’s pretty obvious who the yoyo is.
I so agree with Old Crank.
Our government allows the richest few to save a few dollars a year on ridiculous tax cuts while they cut spending in Education and talk of Social Security being gone.
Who funded Social Security? Not the people who get to vote on it. They all have private pensions that the rest of us can’t get and our 401k plans can’t compete with. Yet, they vote on the money and future of the generation who poured their blood, sweat and tears into making this country great. My grandparents shouldn’t have to worry about losing their “retirement” Social Security benefits.
Our schools are so behind in our technology and testing that 3rd world contries are beating us at Math. Where have all our geniuses gone? To other countries for cheaper educations. We pay our primary educators some of the lowest salaries in the world while we cut the money they used to have to buy classroom neccessities. Our schools do without because they keep getting told to make even deeper cuts. Bake Sales aren’t going to cover everything. Besides, with all the online schooling options, why go to a school at all?
And I agree about Katrina. That was an abomination and an affront to the people who watched their lives be destroyed.
We all know if it hadn’t been for the Women’s Open being here…. that fire would have burned all night………..
LET 1000 people drown? are you kidding? Who LET the hundreds of scool busses sit idle while the water was pouring through the levies? It was a democratic mayor who turned down offers of help.
