The Colorado Department of Revenue recently released a list of medical marijuana businesses that are legally registered at the state level to operate, and El Paso County has cross-referenced the list against businesses that have obtained land use permits through the county to operate.

Here’s the gist.

There are a lot fewer businesses in operation than what had intended to open shop, according to Mark Gebhart, land development code administrator.

Original applications to the county, made before July 1, 2010, were:

26 dispensaries, 13 infused-product manufacturers and 38 growers.

The current standing of what’s open: 

9 dispensaries,  4 infused product manufacturers and an estimated 14 growers. Gebhart said growers can’t be confirmed because their existence is not public record, as per state law.

But the number of locations of MMJ-related businesses is fewer — between 12 and 15 sites — because one business owner could operate the three different types of businesses at the same location.

The state’s moratorium on new MMJ businesses is still in effect but could be lifted as early as March. That would open the  door for more businesses to start up.
